EC Broth contains casein peptone as a source of nutrients. Lactose provides the carbohydrate fermented by coliform bacteria and E. coli. In addition, lactose-positive bacteria metabolise lactose with gas formation. Gram-positive bacteria are inhibited by the mixture of bile salts.
